Avalanche report for Sunday 8 December 2024.

The fresh wind slabs represent the main danger.

all day it applies above the treeline considerable avalanche danger, so danger level three, below low avalanche danger, so danger level one.

all day, above the treeline, we have a wind slab problem. This in all aspects. Furthermore, all day, above 2400 meter, we have a persistent weak layer problem. Especially in the aspects North-West to North to East.

On Sunday sometimes easily released wind slabs will form at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions. The avalanche prone locations are to be found on steep slopes of all aspects. Caution is to be exercised in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. These avalanche prone locations are sometimes covered with new snow and are therefore difficult to recognise. Caution is to be exercised also in areas close to the tree line, and below the tree line. As a consequence of new snow and strong wind individual natural avalanches are possible as the day progresses. In some cases avalanches are medium-sized. Additionally in very isolated cases avalanches can also be released in the old snowpack and reach medium size in isolated cases, in particular on very steep northwest, north and east facing slopes above approximately 2400 m. Individual small gliding avalanches are possible. The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information that has been collected in the field, so that the avalanche danger should be investigated especially thoroughly in the relevant locality.

And now the snowpack:

Over a wide area 20 to 40 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall. In some places new snow is lying on a weakly bonded old snowpack, especially on northwest, north and east facing slopes at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions. The snowpack will be subject to considerable local variations. Snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.

We have the following danger patterns: dp.6: cold, loose snow and wind, dp.1: deep persistent weak layer.

The tendency for Monday 9 December 2024 indicates a decreasing avalanche danger.

Have a nice day and don't forget to be careful!
