Avalanche report for Friday 20 December 2024.
Fresh wind slabs represent the main danger.
all day it applies above the treeline moderate avalanche danger, so danger level two, below low avalanche danger, so danger level one.
all day, above the treeline, we have a wind slab problem. Especially in the aspects North-West to North to South-East.
The mostly small wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases on northwest to north to southeast facing aspects above the tree line. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in gullies and bowls. Their prevalence will increase with altitude. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised in particular in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls.
And now the snowpack:
Only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year. The snowpack will be generally subject to considerable local variations. 5 to 15 cm of snow will fall until midday. As a consequence of new snow and a strong to storm force northerly foehn wind, mostly small wind slabs will form in particular in gullies and bowls. The wind slabs are in some cases prone to triggering.
We have the following danger patterns: dp.6: cold, loose snow and wind. The tendency for Saturday 21 December 2024 indicates a steady avalanche danger.
Have a nice day and don't forget to be careful!
