Avalanche report for Saturday 21 December 2024.
Fresh wind slabs represent the main danger.
all day it applies above the treeline moderate avalanche danger, so danger level two, below low avalanche danger, so danger level one.
all day, above the treeline, we have a wind slab problem. Especially in the aspects North-West to North to South-East.
The fresh wind slabs are prone to triggering on northwest to north to southeast facing aspects. Even single winter sport participants can release avalanches in some places. The avalanche prone locations are to be found adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls above the tree line. Individual avalanche prone locations are to be found also in areas close to the tree line. They are sometimes covered with new snow and are therefore difficult to recognise. Avalanches can reach medium size. Shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack can indicate the danger.
And now the snowpack:
Over a wide area 10 to 30 cm of snow has fallen. As a consequence of a moderate to strong wind from northwesterly directions, wind slabs formed adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. These are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack in particular on steep north and east facing slopes above the tree line.
We have the following danger patterns: dp.6: cold, loose snow and wind, dp.2: gliding snow. The tendency for Sunday 22 December 2024 indicates a steady avalanche danger.
Have a nice day and don't forget to be careful!
