Avalanche report for Sunday 22 December 2024.

Increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and wind. The off-piste conditions are unfavourable.

earlier in the day it applies above the treeline considerable avalanche danger, so danger level three, below low avalanche danger, so danger level one. later in the day it applies above the treeline considerable avalanche danger, so danger level three, below moderate avalanche danger, so danger level two.

earlier in the day, above the treeline, we have a wind slab problem. Especially in the aspects North-West to North to South-East. Furthermore, earlier in the day, above 2200 meter, we have a persistent weak layer problem. Especially in the aspects North-West to North to East. Furthermore, later in the day, above the treeline, we have a new snow problem. This in all aspects. Furthermore, later in the day, above 2200 meter, we have a persistent weak layer problem. This in all aspects. Furthermore, later in the day, below 2400 meter, we have a gliding snow problem. Especially in the aspects East to South to West.

The wind slabs of the last few days can be released even by a single winter sport participant on northwest to north to southeast facing aspects. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain above the tree line. Individual avalanche prone locations are to be found also in areas close to the tree line. They are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility. As a consequence of new snow and stormy weather the prevalence and size of these avalanche prone locations will increase as the day progresses. The new snow and wind slabs can be released easily, or, in isolated cases naturally in all aspects. Mostly avalanches are medium-sized. They can in isolated cases penetrate near-ground layers of the snowpack and reach large size. This applies in particular above approximately 2200 m. Small to medium-sized gliding avalanches are possible on steep grassy slopes.

And now the snowpack:

Over a wide area 20 to 40 cm of snow, and up to 50 cm in some localities, will fall until the evening. The wind will be strong to storm force adjacent to ridgelines. The large quantity of fresh snow as well as the extensive wind slabs are lying on top of a weakly bonded old snowpack.

We have the following danger patterns: dp.6: cold, loose snow and wind, dp.1: deep persistent weak layer.

The tendency for Monday 23 December 2024 indicates an increasing avalanche danger.

Have a nice day and don't forget to be careful!
