Avalanche report for Tuesday 24 December 2024.

The backcountry and freeriding conditions are unfavourable.

all day it applies above the treeline considerable avalanche danger, so danger level three, below moderate avalanche danger, so danger level two.

all day, above the treeline, we have a new snow problem. This in all aspects. Furthermore, all day, above 2200 meter, we have a persistent weak layer problem. This in all aspects. Furthermore, all day, below 2400 meter, we have a gliding snow problem. Especially in the aspects East to South to West.

The large quantity of fresh snow and the extensive wind slabs can be released easily, even by a single winter sport participant,. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in all aspects above the tree line. As a consequence of new snow and strong wind more frequent natural avalanches are to be expected by the early morning. Avalanches can in isolated cases penetrate near-ground layers of the snowpack and reach large size. This applies above approximately 2200 m. Midday and afternoon: With the end of the precipitation, the natural activity of slab avalanches will gradually decrease. An increasing number of small to medium-sized gliding avalanches are to be expected on steep grassy slopes. They can be released at any time of day or night.

And now the snowpack:

Over a wide area 20 to 40 cm of snow has fallen since Saturday. 15 to 25 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall until the evening. The wind will be strong at times. The various wind slabs have bonded poorly with each other and the old snowpack. Isolated avalanche prone weak layers exist in the bottom section of the old snowpack above approximately 2200 m.

We have the following danger patterns: dp.6: cold, loose snow and wind, dp.1: deep persistent weak layer.

The tendency for Wednesday 25 December 2024 indicates a decreasing avalanche danger.

Have a nice day and don't forget to be careful!
