Avalanche report for Tuesday 18 March 2025.

Weakly bonded old snow requires caution. Fresh wind slabs at elevated altitudes.

all day it applies above 2200 meter moderate avalanche danger, so danger level two, below low avalanche danger, so danger level one.

all day, above 2200 meter, we have a persistent weak layer problem. Especially in the aspects North-West to North to North-East. Furthermore, all day, above 2400 meter, we have a wind slab problem. Especially in the aspects West to North to East.

Weak layers in the old snowpack can still be released in some places by individual winter sport participants. Avalanches can reach medium size. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on very steep shady slopes above approximately 2200 m. They are barely recognisable, even to the trained eye. Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for a certain restraint. Fresh wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in particular on steep shady slopes above approximately 2400 m. The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas. The number and size of avalanche prone locations will increase with altitude. The avalanche prone locations are clearly recognisable to the trained eye. On steep grassy slopes individual small to medium-sized gliding avalanches are possible, especially in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation. As a consequence of warming during the day and the solar radiation, the likelihood of moist loose snow slides being released will increase a little on extremely steep sunny slopes.

And now the snowpack:

The weather conditions facilitated a strengthening of the snowpack. Shady slopes: Avalanche prone weak layers exist in the centre of the snowpack in particular on little used shady slopes. The fresh wind slabs of Monday are lying on soft layers especially on shady slopes at elevated altitudes. Sunny slopes: The solar radiation will give rise as the day progresses to moistening of the snowpack on steep sunny slopes.

We have the following danger patterns: dp.5: snowfall after a long period of cold, dp.6: cold, loose snow and wind.

The tendency for Wednesday 19 March 2025 indicates a steady avalanche danger.

Have a nice day and don't forget to be careful!
