Update of the avalanche forecast for Thursday 26 March 2026.

A sometimes precarious avalanche situation will prevail.

all day it applies above the treeline considerable avalanche danger, so danger level three, below low avalanche danger, so danger level one.

all day, above the treeline, we have a wind slab problem. This in all aspects. Furthermore, all day, above 2200 meter, we have a persistent weak layer problem. Especially in the aspects West to North to East.

Wind slabs are very prone to triggering in all aspects above the tree line. These can be released in near-surface layers. Avalanches can also penetrate near-ground layers of the snowpack and reach medium size on west, north and east facing slopes. Natural avalanches are to be expected. This applies especially at the base of rock walls and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. In addition an appreciable danger of loose snow avalanches exists. Gliding avalanches can also occur, especially on cut and grassy slopes.

And now the snowpack:

20 to 30 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall. The wind will be storm force. The northwesterly wind will transport the new snow significantly. Extensive wind slabs will form. The new snow and wind slabs will be deposited on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack above the tree line. The old snowpack will be weakly bonded, especially on west, north and east facing slopes above approximately 2200 m, and on south facing slopes at elevated altitudes.

The tendency for Friday 27 March 2026 indicates a steady avalanche danger.
