Avalanche report for Sunday 22 December 2024.

Increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and wind.

earlier in the day it applies above the treeline moderate avalanche danger, so danger level two, below low avalanche danger, so danger level one. later in the day it applies above the treeline considerable avalanche danger, so danger level three, below low avalanche danger, so danger level one.

earlier in the day, above the treeline, we have a wind slab problem. Especially in the aspects North-West to North to South-East. Furthermore, earlier in the day, above 2200 meter, we have a persistent weak layer problem. Especially in the aspects North-West to North to East. Furthermore, later in the day, above the treeline, we have a wind slab problem. This in all aspects. Furthermore, later in the day, above 2200 meter, we have a persistent weak layer problem. Especially in the aspects North-West to North to East.

The wind slabs of the last few days are in some cases prone to triggering on northwest to north to southeast facing aspects above the tree line. Single winter sport participants can release avalanches, including medium-sized ones. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. As a consequence of new snow and wind the prevalence and size of these avalanche prone locations will increase as the day progresses. In the course of the day danger level 3 (considerable) will be reached. The fresh wind slabs will become increasingly prone to triggering in all aspects above the tree line. Individual avalanche prone locations are to be found also in areas close to the tree line. In isolated cases avalanches can also be triggered in near-ground layers and reach large size. This applies in particular on very steep north and east facing slopes above approximately 2200 m.

And now the snowpack:

Over a wide area 15 to 30 cm of snow will fall until the evening. The wind will be strong to storm force adjacent to ridgelines. The fresh snow and in particular the extensive wind slabs are lying on top of a weakly bonded old snowpack.

We have the following danger patterns: dp.6: cold, loose snow and wind, dp.1: deep persistent weak layer.

The tendency for Monday 23 December 2024 indicates an increasing avalanche danger.

Have a nice day and don't forget to be careful!
