Avalanche prone locations are found in wind-impacted steep terrain, behind protruberances and in wind-loaded gullies and bowls. They increase in size and frequency with ascending altitude. In older drifts and deeper layers of the old snowpack, triggerings are generally possible only by large additional loading, e.g. bunched skiers, explosives. Such avalanches can grow to medium-to-large size.
