This, plus the snowfall of the day before was transported by intermittently strong W/NW winds above the timberline. With ascending altitude, vast snowdrift accumulations were generated. They are prone to triggering. Fresh snow and drifts were often deposited on top of cold, loose old snowpack layers or atop drifts formed in recent days. Bonding deteriorates with ascending altitude (moderate-to-weak). Older, covered snowdrift accumulations are now concealed from view. At higher altitudes on steep shady slopes, surface hoar or faceted intermediate layers are evident in the snowpack - weak layers all, prone to triggering. Avalanche danger assessment Considerable avalanche danger prevails. The main danger stems from fresh snow and snowdrift accumulations. New drifts are prone to triggering and can be unleashed by one single skier. Avalanche prone locations are found in wind-impacted steep terrain, behind protruberances and in wind-loaded gullies and bowls. They will increase in size and frequency over the course of the day with further snowfall and wind. Inside older drifts and deeper layers of the old snowpack, triggerings are generally possible only by large additional loading, e.g. bunched skiers, explosives. Backcountry activities require experience in assessing avalanche dangers on-site. Particularly where snowfall has been heaviest, naturally triggered, generally small-to-medium, but as snowfall continues also large-sized loosely-packed and slab avalanches are possible in very steep terrain.
