On Friday morning the precipitation will continue, falling as rain up to 1600 m. At higher altitudes, strong-velocity NW winds will transport the fresh snow over wide-ranging areas. The drifts are prone to triggering at the borders to other layers, can also fracture in the embedded weak layers of faceted crystals and graupel. The snowpack shows marked effects of wind, gullies and bowls are filled with drifts, combs and ridges are utterly windblown. At intermediate altitudes the snowpack is thoroughly moist down to deep layers, firmness has been lost. On smooth, steep, grass-covered slopes and in wooded clearances, glide-snow avalanches can be expected. Near ground level above 1600 m, weak layers of faceted crystals have persisted and are prone to triggering, particularly in the eastern Bavarian Alps. Rain up to 1600 m and snowdrifts at high altitudes are creating a tense avalanche situation for the next few days. Endeavors in outlying terrain require experience of assessing risks on-site, knowledge of the terrain and a prudent route selection. Please note: ski areas are currently not being supervised or secured from avalanches. HIGH avalanche danger in Bavarian Alps over widespread areas. Main problem: wet snow. Due to heavy rainfall up to 1600 m, naturally triggered, large-sized wet-snow avalanches can be expected. If the snowpack is swept away down to the ground, avalanches can plummet down to the valley floor. Transportation routes and hiking trails are at risk. At higher altitudes a fresh-snow problem prevails. On steep wind-loaded slopes where snowfall has been heavy, naturally triggered large-sized loose-snow and slab avalanches are possible. Above 1600 m a snowdrift problem threatens. The snowdrift accumulations increase in size and frequency with ascending altitude, can be triggered even by one single skier. The slabs which are triggered can grow to large size. Avalanche prone locations occur primarily in steep ridgeline terrain in all aspects, in freshly drifted gullies and bowls, and behind protruberances and knolls, as well as in forest clearances.
