In the western part of the Bavarian Alps and at high altitude the snowdrift accumulations can be quite big. On shady slopes and in leeward bowls, deeply embedded layers consisting of faceted crystals have persisted in places. Elsewhere at intermediate altitudes, powder snow is deposited atop a melt-freeze encrusted, well settled and compact old snowpack surface. During the night, a thin melt-freeze crust forms in south aspects, where the snowpack structure is in general more favorable. Avalanche danger levels will barely change in the next few days in view of rising temperatures with only insignificant precipitation. Please note: ski slopes are currently not supervised or secured from avalanche danger. Widespread moderate avalanche danger at higher altitudes in the Bavarian Alps. Main problem: snowdrift accumulations. Avalanche prone locations are found adjacent to ridgelines on steep shady slopes, behind protuberances as well as in wind-loaded gullies and bowls. There, slab avalanches can be triggered even by a single skier. Frequency and size of the packed snowdrifts increase with ascending altitude. In the Allgäu and Ammergau Alps as well as at high altitudes in the Werdenfels and Berchtesgaden Alps avalanches can grow to medium size, especially where deeply embedded weak layers are triggered. In the eastern regions and at lower altitudes the danger of taking a fall is higher than that of being buried in snow.
