They are prone triggering, in particular at high altitudes. In addition, deeply embedded layers of faceted crystals have persisted on shady slopes and in wind-protected bowls at high altitude. At intermediate altitudes the snow cover is thoroughly wet because of rain and warm temperatures. A superficial melt-freeze crusts forms during the night which - on sunny slopes - softens again during the day. At intermediate altitudes, no significant weak layers have persisted in the old snowpack. In the northern foothills of the Bavarian Alps only little snow remains below 1300 m. In the next few days, the snowdrift situation will gradually improve. Please note: ski runs are currently not supervised and not secured from avalanches dangers. Above 2000 m moderate avalanche danger prevails in the Bavarian Alps. Below 2000 m the avalanche danger is low. At high altitude the main problem stems from snowdrifts that can be triggered as small to medium-sized slab avalanches, in particular by large additional loading, such as by a group of skiers not maintaining sufficient distances. Avalanche prone locations are found on steep slopes adjacent to ridgelines in NW/N/SE aspects as well as in wind-loaded gullies and bowls. Size and frequency of avalanche prone locations increase with ascending altitude. In steep terrain, small (in individual cases also medium-sized) wet snow and glide snow avalanches can release naturally because of solar radiation and warm temperatures.
