Snow cover / General info Following a night of clear skies - cooling the snowpack through outgoing radiation - the snow is well consolidated in the early morning hours and generally stable. As a result of solar radiation and daytime warming, it then loses its firmness to a significant degree, especially on sunny slopes and at low/intermediate altitudes. Older snowdrifts at high altitude are still prone to triggering in places. Powder exists only in high-altitude shady and wind-protected terrain. Otherwise, breakable wind crusts and, on sunny slopes, melt-freeze crusts dominate. Avalanche danger assessment During the morning hours generally favourable conditions reign, danger is low. Starting in late morning as solar radiation and daytime warming intensify, naturally triggered medium-to-large wet-snow and glide-snow avalanches are possible, particularly on steep sunny slopes below about 2700 m, on shady slopes below 2000 m. Glide-snow avalanches can release at any time of day or night; caution is urged wherever glide cracks appear on the snowpack surface. Wet-snow avalanches can be triggered by skiers, thus, backcountry skiier and freeriding tours should be started early in the day, brought to a close early in the day. And: avoid the well known avalanche starting zones. Especially in extremely steep shady terrain, isolated slab avalanches can be triggered by large additional loading in transitions from shallow to deep snow. Apart from the risks of being buried in snow masses, the danger of being forced to take a fall and swept along deserve consideration.
