In the course of the day the snowpack moistens further, in case of solar radiation and mild temperatures, thereby forfeiting firmness of the uppermost layers. At high altitudes the snowpack is generally well consolidated and stable; hardened, icy surfaces (melt-freeze crusts, wind crusts) dominate. On shady slopes and in wind-protected bowls there is still powder. In extremely steep shady terrain, isolated older snowdrifts have persisted which are prone to triggering. On sunny slopes the snowpack is becoming increasingly bare below 1600 m. Springtime conditions prevail, including a daytime cycle of avalanche danger. Please note: public ski areas are currently not supervised or secured from avalanche dangers. Avalanche danger in the Bavarian Alps is low in early morning. Danger increases to moderate as a result of springtime temperatures and sunshine during the course of the day. Main problem: wet snow. As as result of superficial wetness of the snowpack, particularly on steep sunny slopes, mostly small-sized, in isolated cases also medium-sized superficial wet-snow avalanches can trigger naturally. At intermediate altitudes, the entire snowpack can glide over the ground on steep smooth grass-covered slopes and in sparsely wooded zones. For that reason, circumvent / avoid slopes where glide cracks appear on the surface.
