At intermediate altitudes the snowpack is moist at the ground; elsewhere it is stable and is covered by a melt-freeze crust capable of bearing loads. In sunny terrain the snowpack surface metamorphoses into firn during the course of the day; on steep sun-exposed slopes below 1800 m it is becoming increasingly water-soaked. At high altitudes, the prevailing snowpack surface layers are hard and icy wind crusts and melt-freeze crusts. In wind protected shady places they are covered by a few centimeters of powder snow. Above 2000 m, in many places the base layer of the snowpack consists of large, faceted crystals which in snow profile analysis seem not to threaten. Avalanche danger levels are not expected to change significantly. Please note: Ski runs are currently not being supervised or secured from avalanches. Low avalanche danger in the Bavarian Alps. At intermediate altitudes, a glide snow problem exists on isolated extremely steep slopes with smooth ground surfaces. Glide snow avalanches can trigger naturally in the afternoon, especially on very steep, wet grass-covered south-facing slopes. In addition, small wet loose snow avalanches can be expected in steep rocky sun-exposed terrain. At high altitude, some small triggerable snowdrift patches persist on shady slopes adjacent to ridgelines.
