On shady slopes, in wind-protected bowls, and in forest transition zones the new snow is found deposited atop layers composed of faceted crystals or graupel and is trigger-sensitive. Additionally, weak intermediate layers are embedded in the new snowpack of the last few days. These were able to form while precipitation paused. The fresh snow has been transported by gusty northwesterly winds, generating large, trigger-sensitive snowdrift accumulations. At lower altitudes the fresh snow is deposited on a previously bare ground and becomes moist from below which promotes gliding. Precipitations subside, but the avalanche situation remains tense. Any endeavors in Alpine terrain require a high degree of caution and excellent knowledge in assessing avalanche risks on-site. Please note: public ski areas are currently not supervised or secured from avalanche dangers. High avalanche danger prevails in the Allgäu Alps and Werdenfalls Alps above 1600 m, in the Berchtesgaden Alps above 1800 m. Elsewhere the avalanche danger is considerable. Main problem: new snow and snowdrift. Avalanche prone locations are found in steep terrain in all aspects in particular close to ridgelines, behind protuberances, and in wind-loaded gullies and bowls. Stormy wind transports and binds the fresh snow. Medium-sized to large slab avalanches can be triggered even by a single skier. Size and frequency of avalanche prone locations increase with ascending altitude. Additionally, loose snow and slab avalanches can trigger naturally in steep wind-loaded terrain. They can grow to large size, in particular at higher altitudes in the Allgäu, Werdenfels, and Berchtesgaden Alps. It is possible that snow masses start gliding over the ground as glide snow avalanches on steep grass-covered slopes which have previously been bare of snow.
