Partly large snowdrift accumulations have been generated by Wednesday. At intermediate altitudes the bonding between new snow and old snow is good, but deteriorates with ascending altitude. Weak intermediate layers are embedded in the new snow and snowdrift accumulations of the last few days that are partly still prone to triggering, in particular at high altitude. At lower altitudes the snow was deposited on previously bare ground and is wet at ground level. Avalanche danger levels are not expected to change significantly. Please note: Ski runs are currently not being supervised or secured from avalanches. Above 2000 the avalanche danger in the Bavarian Alps is considerable; elsewhere it is moderate. The main problem stems from the large quantities of new snow that have fallen in the last few days. Small to medium-sized loose snow avalanches are expected to trigger on very steep slopes in all aspects. They release spontaneously, in particular as a consequence of solar radiation. Slab avalanches can be triggered in ridgeline terrain and in gullies and bowls filled with snowdrifts, in particular by large additional loading. The snowdrift accumulations are blanketed by loose fresh snow and are difficult to detect. Size and frequency of avalanche prone locations increase with ascending altitude. Above 2000 m, the avalanches can grow to large size. In addition, glide-snow avalanches are possible on steep slopes with smooth ground. Glide cracks are indicators of imminent danger.
