Avalanche danger assessment Avalanche danger is considerable above 2000 m, below that altitude danger is moderate. Main danger: fresh, trigger-sensitive snowdrifts. Small-to-medium slab avalanches can be triggered even by the weight of one single skier. If an avalanche fractures in more deeply embedded weak layers inside the snowpack, it can grow to large size. Older snowdrifts have been blanketed-over, are hard to recognize. Size and frequency of avalanche prone locations increase with ascending altitude. Backcountry activities demand experience in assessing risks on-site and knowledge of local terrain.
