Such layers and older snowdrifts are still prone to triggering with ascending altitude and in extremely steep terrain. Embedded layers of Sahara dust and melt-freeze crusts of the last few days constitute weak/gliding layers for wet-snow avalanches. This has been observed particularly in the Rätikon and Silvretta.
