Mild temperatures and solar radiation on Friday will cause the snowpack to settle and the uppermost layers to quickly moisten. The snowpack will begin to glide downwards. At high altitudes, wind-exposed slopes will become windblown down to the melt-freeze crust; leeward slopes will have massive snowdrift accumulations deposited on them. Due to wind impact the snowpack varies enormously from place to place, there are no wide-sized weak layers evident. The old snowpack on sunny slopes and at intermediate altitudes is moist down to more deeply embedded layers but is by and large stable and compact. Naturally triggered wet-snow and glide-snow avalanches need to be considerate when planning backcountry tours. The avalanche situation is expected to slowly improve. Please note: public ski areas are currently not supervised or secured from avalanche dangers. Avalanche danger in the Allgäu Alps and Berchtesgaden Alps above 1800 m is considerable, elsewhere in the Bavarian Alps danger is moderate. Main problem: wet snow. On steep rocky slopes where there has been fresh snow, naturally triggered large-sized loose-snow and slab avalanches can be expected. On slopes which previously were bare of snow, on smooth grassy slopes and in sparsely wooded zones, the snow mass can glide away as a glide-snow avalanche, and grow to large size. Slopes with glide-cracks should be circumvented, or departed from quickly. Exposed transportation routes and hiking trails can be placed at risk. At higher altitudes, fresh and older snowdrift accumulations can be triggered primarily by large additional loading, e.g. a skier group not maintaining distances. Avalanche prone locations are found in steep ridgeline terrain in N-E-SW aspects and in freshly wind-loaded gullies and bowls. The slabs which get triggered can grow to medium size.
