In the south a considerable avalanche danger will be encountered over a wide area

Snowpack
The fresh snow and snow drift accumulations of recent days have mostly bonded well with the old snowpack. Avalanche releases can occur in particular within the fresh snow and snow drift accumulations, but in some places also at the interface with the old snowpack. In all regions, avalanches are unlikely to be released in deeper layers of the snowpack.
Under the influence of solar radiation, loose snow avalanches originating in the fresh snow are to be expected in the west and south in particular.
Observed weather on Monday, 12.04.2021
Snow fell over a wide area. In the north, the snowfall level already dropped during the night, from 2000 m to low altitudes. In the south it dropped gradually during the day, from 1500 m towards 1200 m.
Fresh snow
From Saturday evening until Monday afternoon above approximately 1800 m:
  • Chablais, Vaud Alps, central part of the southern flank of the Alps, Avers, Val Bregaglia, Bernina region: 20 to 40 cm
  • Other regions: 10 to 20 centimetres over a wide area, but smaller amounts in Upper Valais
Temperature
At midday at 2000 m: about -7 °C in the north and about -3 °C in the south
Wind

  • During the day, moderate from northerly directions, in the afternoon in the south, increasingly strong from the north
Weather forecast through Tuesday, 13.04.2021
In the north and Grisons the weather will be cloudy. Towards the east a little more snow will fall down to low altitudes. In the west there will be some bright spells during the day. In southern Valais and Ticino after a clear night it will be mostly sunny.
Fresh snow
From Monday afternoon until Tuesday afternoon above approximately 1500 m:
  • Central and eastern parts of the northern flank of the Alps, Grisons excluding Moesano: 5 to 15 cm
  • Other regions: mostly dry
Temperature
At midday at 2000 m: about -8 °C in the north and about -4 °C in the south
Wind
On the main Alpine ridge and in the south, mostly strong, otherwise moderate, from northerly directions
Outlook through Thursday, 15.04.2021
On Wednesday, in particular in the east, it will be only partly sunny. Otherwise, the weather will be quite sunny on each of the coming days with cloudbanks and convective cloud in the second half of the day in particular. It will remain cold. The wind will ease. The danger of dry avalanches will decrease. Solar radiation may give rise to moist loose snow avalanches originating in steep terrain as the day progresses.
