At high altitudes, too, the snow at the surface is becoming moist and can trigger on a weak layer close to the surface or on a compact and encrusted old snowpack surface. On the shady side at high altitudes weak intermediate layers that are still triggerable are embedded in the uppermost meters of the snowpack. On shady slopes the surface snow is still loose. At intermediate altitudes the snowpack is partly thoroughly soaked down to the ground and can start gliding over the smooth ground surface. No significant change in avalanche danger is expected in the next few days. Please note: public ski areas are currently not supervised or secured from avalanche dangers. Above 2000 m avalanche danger in the Bavarian Alps is moderate; below that it increases from low to moderate in the course of the day. At high altitudes the main danger stems from weak snow layers on shady slopes. Slab avalanches can be released on steep slopes in the northern region by large additional loading such as a group of skiers not maintaining distances, in particular at transitions from shallow snow to deep snow. Avalanches can grow to medium size. In addition, medium-sized wet snow and slab avalanches can release naturally or by the additional weight of on sole skier in steep rocky terrain during the day as a consequence of solar radiation and daytime warming. It is also possible that wet snow slides down on steep and smooth grass-covered slopes in the form of small to medium-sized glide-snow avalanches. Avalanche prone locations are mainly found on the sunny side and below approximately 2000 m.
