Wind slabs

As a consequence of new snow and a sometimes strong wind from southwesterly directions, wind slabs will form in particular in gullies and bowls as well as at elevated altitudes. In the course of the day these will increase in size moderately. In many cases wind slabs are lying on the soft surface of an old snowpack. Avalanches can in some places be released by a single winter sport participant, but they will be small in most cases. Even a small avalanche can sweep people along and give rise to falls.
