From southern Valais through northern Ticino into the inneralpine regions of Grisons, weak layers exist deep in the old snowpack.
Last week, individual large avalanches were triggered in these layers by people. Although rare, these avalanche prone locations
are unrecognisable as such.
Further north, the bonding of the snowpack is more favourable. In some places, however, in particular in northern Valais and
the western part of the northern flank of the Alps, the snowpack contains weak layers in which avalanches can be released.
Exceptionally little snow is lying on the southern flank of the Alps; many measuring stations are recording the lowest ever
amounts for this time of year. The snowpack has been influenced by the wind and warm temperatures and is variable.
