Clear skies during the night will give rise to a strong crust on sunny slopes over a wide area. Warming and solar radiation
during the day will thaw the crust and weaken the snowpack. Both wet snow and gliding avalanches can occur.
In particular in southern Valais and the inneralpine and southern regions of Grisons, distinct weak layers exist deep in the
snowpack. These will respond especially sensitively as moistening begins. In the indicated places, moist and wet snow avalanches
can release deep layers of the snowpack or be initiated directly in these layers. They can also be released by people in some
cases.
The snowpack is thoroughly moist on south facing slopes below approximately 2800 m, on east and west facing slopes below approximately
2400 m, and on north facing slopes below approximately 1600 m.
