Otherwise, the old snowpack is heavily soaked to wet right up to the high altitudes and consists mainly of snowmelt. Only on north-facing slopes at high altitudes can layers of faceted crystals still be present deep in the snowpack. There is hardly any snow on the north side below 1600 metres and on the entire south side."
