Danger level
Danger Level 3 - Considerable above the treeline
Danger Level 2 - Moderate above the treeline
Avalanche Problem
Wind-drifted snow above the treeline, N-NE-E-SE-S-SW-W-NW
Gliding snow above the treeline, N-NE-E-SE-S-SW-W-NW

Fresh wind slabs at elevated altitudes. Moist and wet avalanches below the tree line.

As a consequence of fresh snow and wind, extensive wind slabs formed especially in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation. They will become increasingly prone to triggering in all aspects above the tree line. The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. These places are prevalent and are difficult to recognise. The prevalence of avalanche prone locations and likelihood of triggering will increase with altitude.

As a consequence of the precipitation more small to medium-sized moist and wet avalanches are to be expected below approximately 2000 m. This applies on steep slopes in all aspects. In addition a latent danger of gliding avalanches exists.

Snowpack

dp 6: cold, loose snow and wind
dp 2: gliding snow

In particular from the Stubai Alps via the Zillertal Alps to the Lienzer Dolomites over a wide area 20 to 30 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell above approximately 1600 m. The wind was moderate to strong at times. Fresh wind slabs are lying on soft layers in all aspects above the tree line. Over a wide area 10 to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall today above approximately 1000 m. The old snowpack will be wet all the way through at low and intermediate altitudes.

Tendency

Fresh wind slabs in the high Alpine regions. Moist and wet avalanches below the tree line.

Avalanche Problem
Wind-drifted snow above the treeline, N-NE-E-SE-S-SW-W-NW

Slab avalanches and wet avalanches during the day are the main danger.

As a consequence of the fresh snow more frequent small to medium-sized slab avalanches are possible. This applies on steep slopes in all aspects in particular above the tree line. In addition a certain danger of gliding avalanches exists, especially on steep grassy slopes below approximately 2000 m.
At elevated altitudes mostly small wind slabs will form. They are in isolated cases prone to triggering on steep shady slopes above the tree line. The prevalence of avalanche prone locations and likelihood of triggering will increase with altitude.

Snowpack

dp 6: cold, loose snow and wind
dp 2: gliding snow

Over a wide area 10 to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen yesterday above approximately 1400 m. Over a wide area 10 to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall today above approximately 1000 m. The old snowpack will be wet all the way through at intermediate and high altitudes.

Tendency

Fresh wind slabs in the high Alpine regions. Moist and wet avalanches below the tree line.
