Less snow than usual is lying. The snowpack will be generally well bonded. Older wind slabs must be evaluated with care and prudence in high Alpine regions.

The mostly small wind slabs of the last few days are clearly recognisable to the trained eye. They represent the main danger. The avalanches are small and can mostly be released by large loads.
Caution is to be exercised in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls in high Alpine regions on very steep shady slopes. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack can indicate the danger.

Snowpack

From a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying. The snowpack will be generally subject to considerable local variations. Over a wide area various wind slab layers are lying on a hard crust.

Tendency

Older wind slabs represent the main danger.
