The fresh wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases on very steep north and east facing slopes. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls at elevated altitudes. The small wind slabs are clearly recognisable to the trained eye. Restraint should be exercised because avalanches can sweep people along and give rise to falls.
Snowpack
dp.6: cold, loose snow and wind
As a consequence of a strong wind from westerly directions, further wind slabs will form in particular adjacent to ridgelines on north and east facing slopes. The fresh wind slabs are in some cases prone to triggering at elevated altitudes.
Only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year. The snowpack will be subject to considerable local variations. On sunny slopes at low and intermediate altitudes hardly any snow is lying. The spring-like weather conditions as the day progresses will give rise to slight moistening of the snowpack also at high altitude.
Tendency
Wind slabs require caution.
Danger level
Low avalanche danger will prevail.
Wind slabs are small and can only be released in isolated cases. Individual avalanche prone locations are to be found on very steep north and east facing slopes at elevated altitudes, in particular in gullies and bowls. The avalanche prone locations are rare and are easy to recognise. Restraint should be exercised because avalanches can sweep people along and give rise to falls.
Snowpack
Only a little snow is lying. The snowpack will be subject to considerable local variations. As a consequence of a sometimes strong wind from westerly directions, small wind slabs will form in some regions. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise to moistening of the snowpack on steep sunny slopes.
Tendency
Low avalanche danger will prevail.
Danger level
A mostly favourable avalanche situation will prevail.
The small wind slabs can be released in isolated cases on extremely steep shady slopes at elevated altitudes. Caution is to be exercised on near-ridge slopes, as well as in gullies and bowls. The avalanche prone locations are rare and are clearly recognisable to the trained eye. Restraint should be exercised because avalanches can sweep people along and give rise to falls.
Snowpack
dp.6: cold, loose snow and wind
As a consequence of a moderate to strong wind from southwesterly directions, small wind slabs formed since Wednesday in isolated cases, especially on near-ridge north and east facing slopes at elevated altitudes.
Only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year. Above the tree line snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. On steep sunny slopes below the tree line hardly any snow is lying. The spring-like weather conditions as the day progresses will give rise to softening of the snowpack also above the tree line.
